Installing Thunderbird extensions is very easy, and so is installing mailalternative:

Download the XPI file (right-click on the link and choose 'Save as...')
In Thunderbird, choose Tools -> Extensions -> Install... and locate the file you just downloaded.
Restart Thunderbird and you're set...

The extensions dialog provides the following options:

Setting the option 'Redirect Eudora style ('by way of') produces a mail like this:

Setting the option 'Set Sender: header' produces a mail like this:

Sender header

Turning both options off (default setting) means default mailredirect behaviour (that is, an RFC2822 compatible redirect).
